"We" and "us" on this page mean the one person who runs InteractiVenn: Henry Heberle. InteractiVenn is a free, non-commercial research tool.
Terms of use
- InteractiVenn is free for research and teaching. You do not need an account.
- The diagrams and files you make are yours. Use and publish them as you like. If InteractiVenn helped your work, please cite the paper (see Citation). This is a request, not a condition.
- The software itself is copyright Henry Heberle, all rights reserved. Using the website is allowed; copying or redistributing the program code is not.
- We provide the tool "as is". We give no warranty that results are correct or that the site is available. Check important results yourself. Do not use it as the only basis for medical or other critical decisions.
- We are liable without limit for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, and wherever the law does not allow liability to be limited (for example under product liability law). Otherwise we are not liable. As the tool is a free service, this matches German law on gifts and free loans (§§ 521, 599 BGB).
- German law applies. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory law of the country where you live.
Privacy
Your sets stay in your browser. Files you open and names you type are processed on your device. The app never sends them to our server. We only receive them if you send them to us yourself, for example by e-mail.
The one exception is what you choose to send with the Feedback box or the "Do you prefer the new version?" buttons (shown on some builds of the site). Only when you press Send or a vote button, the page sends one request to this same site with what you typed (or "up" or "down"), the time and the build number of the page. We store those. We store no IP address, cookie or identifier, and never your sets. Do not put personal data in the text. You can write by e-mail instead.
The site uses no cookies, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. We do not sell or share personal data. Apart from our host (Cloudflare, see below), the site loads nothing from other companies: fonts and icons come with the app, and a security policy stops the page from contacting other sites. Because we do not track you, we treat "Do Not Track" and Global Privacy Control signals as already respected.
The support link near the top of the page leads to Ko-fi. It opens in a new tab only when you click it; until then nothing is loaded from Ko-fi, and the link never appears in a figure or a download.
PDF figures that contain characters outside the standard PDF fonts (for example the union sign, Greek or Cyrillic letters) embed a subset of DejaVu Sans 2.37, which is served from this site and fetched only when such a PDF is made. DejaVu Sans is based on Bitstream Vera (© 2003 Bitstream, Inc.); the DejaVu changes are in the public domain. Its licence is at /fonts/LICENSE-DejaVu.txt.
The support line under the header is set in Nunito (SemiBold, Latin subset), © 2014 The Nunito Project Authors, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. It is served from this site and loaded when the page is shown. Its licence is at /fonts/LICENSE-Nunito.txt.
The person responsible for this site (the "controller" under the GDPR and the UK GDPR, "controlador" under Brazil's LGPD) is Henry Heberle, e-mail heberleh.public@gmail.com.
The site is not aimed at children under 16.
What your browser keeps
Your sets, names and results are never stored in your browser. To keep your work, save a session file (File, Save session) and open it again later.
Interface preferences are stored in your browser only if you tick "Save my preferences on this device" (in the News and tours panel or in Settings). It starts unticked; while it is unticked nothing is stored, and unticking it deletes what was stored. Two entries are used, and they never leave your device:
interactivenn.storageConsent: that you agreed to store preferences.interactivenn.prefs: your preferences only: the colour theme, tour progress (which tours you finished, whether "What changed" and the "Next topic?" hint should still appear), whether you want palette advice, and whether you closed the notice at the top of the page.
You can turn this off at any time in Settings (the gear at the top right of the header). That deletes both entries. You can also clear this site's data in your browser.
Share links
"Share link" puts your sets, names and settings inside the link itself, in the part after the #. Browsers never send that part to a server, so the data does not reach ours. It is, however, in the link: anyone who has the link can see your lists, and the link stays in your browser history and wherever you paste it (e-mail, chat, documents). Opening a share link loads the data into the page and removes it from the address bar. If the lists should stay private, send a saved session file instead.
Hosting and server logs
The site is served by Cloudflare Pages (Cloudflare, Inc.). When your browser requests a page or file, Cloudflare's servers log the request: your IP address, the time, the address requested, the page you came from (referrer), your browser type, and technical details such as the status code. The logs never contain your sets. They can show which diagram layout or example file was loaded.
We use these logs only to run the site and keep it secure. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in that (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare keeps them for a limited time, as described in its privacy policy: https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/.
Cloudflare, Inc. processes this data for us as a processor. Cloudflare may process data outside the EU, including in the USA. Those transfers rely on Cloudflare's certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and on the Standard Contractual Clauses in its data processing terms. If you use the Feedback box or the vote buttons, what you send is stored in Cloudflare D1, a database that Cloudflare runs for us.
E-mail
If you write to us, we use your message and address only to answer you. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in replying (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). We keep messages as a record of reported problems and questions, which helps us fix and explain the tool; we don't use them for anything else and don't share them. You can ask us to delete your messages at any time by writing to the same address. The address is a Gmail account, so Google processes your message as our e-mail provider, which may include servers in the USA (Google is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework).
Links to other sites
Some links lead to other sites, such as doi.org, Wikipedia, Google Scholar, LinkedIn and GitHub. Nothing is sent to them until you click. When you do, they receive your IP address and browser details, like any visit, and usually only our domain as the page you came from. Their own privacy policies apply.
Your rights
You can ask us for access to your personal data, and for correction or deletion. You can ask us to restrict its use. You have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interest (Art. 21 GDPR). These rights come from the GDPR (Art. 15-21).
Wherever you live, you also have the rights your own law gives you, for example under the UK GDPR, Brazil's LGPD (Art. 18), Switzerland's FADP or Canada's PIPEDA, and we will honour them.
Write to heberleh.public@gmail.com; this is also the contact channel for the LGPD. You can complain to a data protection authority, for example the one where you live, or ours: the Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Nordrhein-Westfalen (LDI NRW). Others include the UK ICO, Brazil's ANPD, Switzerland's FDPIC and Canada's OPC.
Changes
If we change this page, we update the date at the top. We will never start using your sets without a clear, separate notice first.
